Pineapple Goodness


Of the five tastes that currently exist (sweet, sour, salty, bitter, umami), I am most partial to the combination of sweet/sour. I find the marriage to be quite pleasant.

And I find that pineapple pastries provide that tangy solace I need when those cravings strike. Especially the ones from Malacca. Those are my benchmarks. There is this particular make of homemade pineapple tarts from Malacca that I really love. My family in Malacca always passes us a few boxes whenever we visit.

Those pretty gems are the bomb. I am crazy about the pineapple chunks in the jam.

I could never find the equivalent here in Singapore.

Until recently.


Apparently there’s a famous Taiwanese brand of pineapple tarts called Sunny Hills that just opened a Singapore branch.


These golden bricks contain pineapple jam that has just the right amount of sweet and sour. Its texture is perfect, with plenty of tiny pineapple bits. When I eat these, I try to savour the jam slowly. I think it’s great that they pack quite a generous amount in there.


Apparently, the pineapples used are from Taiwan, in Nantou County. It’s definitely nice to know that the pastry is made using free range eggs and New Zealand butter. There is a clear difference and I speak from personal experience. But of course, it’ll be better if it was made with French butter. :p


Many thanks to Sandy for sending these over. It lasted only a week at home. My whole family loves it.

And I do sure miss the tang.
